Today I want to talk about a topic that I don't often talk about, skin care. It's kind of hard for me to do, because as I have very sensitive, fussy skin, I have found it is hard for me to find skin care products that adjust to my skin and my budget, so after years of trial and error, I ended up making my own.
Yes, I make my own skin care products, and after a few years of doing so with success, I want to share with you what I have learned.
So, why do I make my own skin care? The reasons are varied:
- My skin is very particular, sensitive to harsh detergents like SLS, oily if it's not moisturized, oily if I use a moisturizer that's too heavy, oilier even if I strip it with cleansers, prone to get pimples and rashes.
- I wasn't comfortable with the amount of ingredients that have not been properly tested in cosmetics, plus some environmental concerns about some of those ingredients
- The price of products that did sit well with my skin and my conscience did not sit well with my budget. As much as I would love to splurge on glow recipe's watermelon sleeping mask, it simply isn't possible with my current economy
- Doing my own skin care products gave me a sense of accomplishment, and quite frankly, it's fun.
I do a lot of research on ingredients to make an informed decision on which ones I am comfortable with, read recipes and learn on how to formulate a good product, and now I feel confident enough in what I have learned to start sharing my own recipes with you.
Some of you may ask why I still use 'traditional' makeup instead of making my own too. Well, for one, I do read labels and know which ingredients to avoid (for my skin at least), and secondly, skin care products actually work as a barrier, and primers work as a second barrier, so the makeup I put on my face doesn't really interact with my naked skin. I haven't noticed an increase in sensitivity or breakouts with any makeup I use so long as I properly remove it at the end of the day, so there's that.
I will start sharing with you what I have learned, my go-to recipes, and resources for those who want to follow in this path. I hope you enjoy it. Lots of kisses.
